What is Trauma?

Trauma happens when we experience events that feel overwhelming, frightening, or beyond our ability to cope. It doesn’t always have to be a single dramatic event — it can also build over time from ongoing stress, loss, or difficult experiences. Trauma can affect the way we feel in our bodies, the way we think, and the way we connect with ourselves and others. While its impact can be deep, healing is possible.

Common Signs & Symptoms:

Trauma can show up in many ways — in your body, thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Some common signs include:

Physical & bodily symptoms:

  • Feeling tense, restless, or on edge

  • Trouble sleeping or frequent nightmares

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Headaches, stomach aches, or other unexplained aches and pains

  • Startling easily or feeling jumpy

Emotional & mental symptoms:

  • Intense fear, sadness, or irritability

  • Feeling numb, detached, or disconnected from yourself or others

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Overthinking or replaying upsetting experiences

  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday stress

Behavioural changes:

  • Avoiding certain places, people, or situations

  • Withdrawing from social connections

  • Increased use of substances, food, or other coping strategies
